Episode 21 – Jae

We were thrilled when Jae agreed to join us on Cocktail Hour and we certainly weren’t disappointed with the conversation. We hope you won’t be disappointed, either! As usual when we have a book or author that I’m super excited about, I rambled on a lot. Andy was patient, as always. I just couldn’t help myself!

I don’t think there were any major spoilers so you can jump right in and get a taste of what to expect when you go out and buy her work. I’m pretty sure we, at least briefly, touched on all of her books. We had a great time and Jae was a fantastic guest. Here’s a link to her blog: http://jaefiction.wordpress.com/ and a link to her website: http://www.jae-fiction.com/.

Our drink was pretty fantastic, too. Here’s the recipe for the Sweet Tight Pussy. Although Andy and I thought something along the lines of the Sweet Tight Incredible Hulk Pussy was more appropriate because of the color.

  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1/2 oz Midori® melon liqueur
  • 1/2 oz peach schnapps
  • 1/2 oz 7-Up® soda

Jae was also happy to offer up two of her books for us to give away to a couple of lucky listeners! The winners will have their choice of an autographed copy of any of Jae’s books. If you know the answer to one of the questions below, please send us an email and we’ll pick two winners. One winner for each question. Yes, you can answer both questions if you like.  Please do not post your answer as a comment either on the website or on our Facebook page. Only emailed responses will be accepted and any posted comments with answers in them will be deleted. Send your answers to cocktailhour.show at gmail.com. All entries must be received on or before 11:59 cst Friday, July 23rd to be eligible to win. Tell your friends!

Here are the questions:

  1. In the book Backwards to Oregon, what did little Amy name Luke’s horse?
  2. In Hidden Truths, Amy allowed Rika to name a newborn foal. What name did she choose?
Good luck!

  1. Love you Jae, and love your books. The interview was very enjoyable but I have one little complaint for Andy and the Rev. I can’t believe you’re making Jae choose between a mug and a t-shirt. It’s Jae for crying out loud .. send her both! She’s earned her swag 🙂

  2. Since the order had already been placed when Jersey’s comment came in, I’ll send Jae a t-shirt – or pretty much anything else she wants from our Cafe Press store – after that pirate story comes out.

    How’s that?

    • Thanks, Jersey.

And Rev: You’ve got a deal! Too bad my muse is not taking requests, or I’d earn myself a T-shirt.

  3. And the winners are… Ginny Gerth and Elaine Hardman! Congratulations!

We want to thank everyone who entered. Stay tuned for more give aways!

  4. I’m incurably late for the fun jems in life. At least it is only a year this time. Usually, I just make a comment to myself and move on, but perhaps it could be an interesting add-in this time. If not, lesson learned, and I will not repeat my mistake.

I was reading Jae’s old blog posts (http://jaefiction.wordpress.com/page/4/), because I like her writing and miss the interaction with her style when I finshed reading 4 of her books. It happened with Jane Fletcher’s books as well. I invest my time in the fiction world they create prolifically, it takes time for me to gradually move on to something else.

Jae includes links to things she is refering to in her blog. Her 10 July 2011 Cocktail Hour post led me here. I feel like I’ve been treasure hunting and finding a lot of fun stuff along the way, but have no appropriate way of sending my appreciation without being more of an annoyance (or feeling like one). It makes the journey sweet & sour for being perpetually behind the times. I am a workaholic that occasionally take time off. Unfortunately, years go by before I get a chance to indulge. It is always too late for me to make a comment. At least here perhaps no one will notice except for other late people with the same problem. (*waves at those who follow*)

Now, instead of being irritated at people for leaving those graffitied “x wuz here” signs, I can understand that perhaps maybe they just want to leave something of themselves behind for others to wonder about (even if it is misguided). They were too late to place their hands in the wet concrete, but feel the need to make a personal mark anyway.

Thanks Jae for the treasure hunt. Here is my late “x wuz here” mark to say I appreciate and enjoy your work. Maybe the next time I take time off I will be able to read ‘Hidden Truths’ and anything else you’ve written (as I’m sure you probably will write at least 2 more before I take time off again).

Cheers. I’m off to finish reading 2010/11 written & experienced by Jae. My own experiences are being well blocked out by reading about her’s. That is talent I’m glad to have stumbled into (even if I did stub my toe).

    Perpetually behind the times, Ryan.
