Flicks and Swizzle Sticks-Lesbian Cinema Vol. 2

Hello all, it’s Nikki again with a new edition of Flicks for your listening enjoyment. We got so many great suggestions from our earlier lesbian show, we just had to make another one. Georgia Beers joined me once again to talk about movies and I finagled Melissa Brayden into joining us. We enjoyed Melissa’s drink of choice (The Kentucky Mule) while discussing I Can’t Think Straight, D.E.B.S. , Saving Face, and Kissing Jessica Stein.

Congratulations to Liz Caruso for winning last month’s movie drawing, and don’t forget to enter to win a movie from this podcast by commenting below. We rank our favorites at the end, so be sure to let us know if you agree with us!

Round yourself up a Mule and listen in while we pontificate on the sexy wordiness of Jessica Stein. And for your reference, the definition of non-plussed is “speechless, perplexed.” And don’t you forget it!

Kentucky Mule

1 part Maker’s Mark
3 parts ginger (Melissa recommends Bundaberg)
a dash of lime

Serve over ice, but take heed…the mule can kick!

  1. Hello Nikki, Georgia, and Melissa!! So, I’m listening to the show and, because I can’t make myself take notes and then post one massive comment, I’m going to probably end up making a few smaller comments…

First off, the cover for I Can’t Think Straight is TERRIBLE and I’m so happy that’s not what they use on Netflix or I’d never have bothered. The cover for Amazon Instant View and the paperback – which I couldn’t get past the first chapter of – is much better. I think it shows them in their tennis whites.

I’ve not gotten to your comments about this movie yet but I know that there are some folks that don’t like it. This one is one of my favorites though. I know the acting isn’t the best and it probably has a load of other problems but I just love the chemistry between the two leads – as well as the sister. She rocks. I would also recommend The World Unseen (or words like that) starring the same two women. (The sister in ICTS plays the grandma who gets raped. When she’s young, not as a grandma.)

Ok, I’m going back to listen.

  2. I love D.E.B.S. and Saving Face. Seen D.E.B.S. too many times to count and will continue to watch it – sooo campy and great. I’ve seen Saving Face twice, I think, but want to go watch it again right now.

Kissing Jessica Stein is one movie I really didn’t like. I think I liked parts of it – enough to watch twice – but, if I remember correctly, I really didn’t like the character Jessica. At all. Maybe I’ll watch it again.

  3. Finished listening to the discussion about Kissing Jessica Stein. After the first time I watched it, I remember feeling a low level of pissed-offedness because of the way it ended. I got that Jessica was really a straight woman but, Georgia nailed it, I felt cheated because I expected a movie marketed as a lesbian romantic comedy to end with the two women we spent the movie getting to know being together. If I remember correctly, I think I mostly felt that Jessica used the other woman. Of course, it was also around the same time that a very young friend of mine was still recovering from being dumped by her first major love after the other woman – who was a very close friend of mine – finally decided she was done experimenting. You know, she graduated… That may have had something to do with my extreme dislike of Jessica.

The second time I watched it, I just didn’t like Jessica. Ugh. I think I may have to watch it a third time. Damn you, Flicks & Swizzle Sticks people!

  4. Here’s my ranking – having not rewatched any of them.

    1. Saving Face
    2. I Can’t Think Straight
    3. D.E.B.S
    4. Kissing Jessica Stein
    100. Citizen Kane

Also, Phillip Glass is Ira Glass’ cousin. You’re welcome.

Editing this to let you know that I laughed out loud in my cubicle at your final words. That’s always one of my favorite parts of your shows.

  5. Hi all!

Ok! I freaking loved this show! Best show ever! πŸ˜€ I couldn’t listen to it without laughing!
Please can you three record together again, y’all were great together!

So I have watched 3 out of the 4 movies, I need to watch saving face now! Sounds good,

For me D.E.B.S IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER! So that one is my top movie, the others I can’t rate because I have not seen saving face, so there isn’t any point to rate them until I do

    πŸ™‚

I’m not even going to bother with citizen cane! πŸ˜‰

Can’t wait for the next show, and Nikki! Don’t forget WALL-E πŸ˜€
I expect to hear a show on him in the future. πŸ™‚

  6. My ranking:

    1. Saving Face
    2. I CanÒ€ℒt Think Straight
    3. Kissing Jessica Stein
    4. D.E.B.S

But I must say that after watching D.E.B.S and Kissing Jessica Stein I never felt the need to watch them again.

  7. The 3 of you were great together you all brought such different perspectives to the movies. Would love to hear you all do more shows together.

For me my ranking would be
    1. Cant Think Straight
    2. DEBS and Saving Face the same enjoyed them both have watched both multiple times
    3. Kissing Jessica Stein was one of those to at least watch once

I would throw World Unseen out there as one of my favorites along with Out at the Wedding, love them both.

There are so many movies I could throw out here it is awesome to have such a choice of movies.

    • That’s the plan, Amy! I already told Georgia and Melissa I’m keeping them. They don’t have much to say in the matter πŸ™‚

Good suggestions, I’ll keep them in mind for when we eventually do another lesbian cinema show. Good luck in the drawing!

  8. Lol so you are hijacking Georgia and Melissa, huh? Great show! I agree that the World Unseen was great and out of the 4 from this show I love I Can’t Think Straight! I don’t remember Saving Face. D.E.B.S. was so much fun. As for Kissing Jessica Stein, well, it was done well….but, UGH! So frustrating!

  9. I think kjs is the first “drama comedy” with lesbian theme, so i enjoy watching it.. because before that, all lesbian theme movie is always bit depressing… violence (boys don’t cry), drug (gia), suicide, sad ending, so.. kjs is really refreshing at that time.. but after that, ofcourse Saving Face is the best.

Thank you for the show, your deep analysis about the movies are enlighten. Love 3 of you.

  10. OK, my ranking:
    1. D.E.B.S
    2. Saving Face
    3. Kissing Jessica Stein
    4. I CanÒ€ℒt Think Straight (never seen)

I rank DEBS first because I love the campyness of the movie. Saving Face was the best one for drama, and Kissing Jessica Stein was enjoyable for all the bad dating that occurred. I didn’t mind the ending as I knew Jessica was straight, but I detested her hooking up with her ex-boss. I hated that guy. I have never seen I can’t think Straight, and an not sure I want to now! One I would add that is really enjoyable was Out at the Wedding. You should add that to one of your future Lesbian movie nights. Love your movie nights and look forward to seeing what you come up with.
