Flicks & Swizzle Sticks – Adapted to Film

Join me, Nikki, as I talk about 3 fantastic film adaptations of some favorite books with special guest Sandra Moran. We chose Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Fingersmith, and The Hours, so make sure you comment below to get entered to win either the book OR the film of any discussed in this podcast. And, because Sandra Moran is super generous, she offered up a paperback copy of her new release, Letters Never Sent, for your reading pleasure. That’s right, one comment gets you two chances to win!

A hearty congrats to Liz Caruso for winning the drawing from last month’s Lesbian Cinema Vol. 2 show. And thank you all for listening and continuing to support Cocktail Hour through your donations. It is because of you that we are able to support these giveaways, and your contributions are heartily appreciated.

The drink of the hour was the furlough special-a Bota box of Cabernet Sauvignon. Feel free to grab something classier and listen in while we talk (and talk) about these great films and books!

  1. “Kiss it, make love with it,” you guys cracked me up! Nah, I listened the whole way through. No Victorian sh*t for me either, Nikki. Just don’t care for it. But you were both right on the moolah with Meryl Streep. Every movie, even the one where she played the country singer. All awesome. She just sucks you into every one. If I were to see check out any of the three, that would be the one. Awesome program, ladies. And just to show you how good I listened, Nikki you sound a bit like Rosie O’Donnell and Sandra, I love the way you say “was.”

  2. Thanks for this talk. It was fun to listen to it. Now I really want to read ‘Fingersmith’ (put it away last time) .. I couldn’t remember all details of OANTOF (re-read? or going for the movie .. hmm?!?) and I have hours in a German version, but wasn’t in the mood to read it yet .. list gets longer and longer .. need to quit my job *haha*

  3. Nice show! “Oranges are not the only fruit” is a TV mini series and not a movie, which explains the length. Nikki, since it was your first Winterson book I’d like to recommend that you read more books by her (especially “The Passion”, “Written on the body” and her memoir “Why be happy when you can be normal”). Her prose is amazing.

  4. I really enjoyed the show and am going to check out Orange on youtube next!! I saw The Hours and thought it was excellent! Thanks so much for doing the show! Cannot wait for next week and when you do the women in action either!!

  5. Thanks for the fun and entertaining show! I enjoyed “Oranges” but really connected with “Why be happy when you can be normal” . . . not sure what that says about me! πŸ˜‰
I’ve checked the movie “Hours” out from my library and hope to enjoy it this weekend.
Nikki, you and Sandra had me spluttering with laughter over the “bag of sh*t” confusion and commentary – fun, fun, fun!

    • Blu!!!! How are you, friend?? Thank you for listening! Did you get an email re: your book donation?

Nikki is hilarious … I was just the straight man on this one.

      • I am great, Sandra, hope you’re feeling better?
Yep, I heard from Bill – thanks!
        “straight man” – bwahahaha!

You two had some super observations about the books and adaptations – found them interesting to listen to and think about.

I watched “Hours” today and found it engrossing. I loved the theme of “expectations” (among others) that ran throughout the story.

Thanks, both of you, for the great show.

  6. Listening to you two together, I feel as if I have just finished off 5 large cappuccino’s, Great energy, Great adaptations , I have seen the movies for FingerSmith, and the Hours. Thanks to your energies, I will check out Oranges are not the only fruit.

    • So glad you enjoyed it and decided to give Oranges a go. Just be patient through the beginning carnival spot πŸ˜‰

      Good luck in the drawing!

  7. I freaking loved this show! πŸ˜€ Nikki I have to say you swear WAY more than Cheri does πŸ˜›

I haven’t seen or read ANY of these so winning one would be awesome, πŸ™‚

Another great guest to have on πŸ™‚ Sandra you have to be on again, you two are great to listen to. And I agree with Nikki, your book totally rocks!

Nikki Your Manchester imitation was pretty awful πŸ˜› lol I’m sure Cari doesn’t speak like that! πŸ˜€

Can’t wait for the next show! I LOVE national lampoons Christmas vacation! I watch it every year! πŸ˜€

    • She had to make up for my lack of swearing, Carrie. πŸ™‚

You’re going to love all of these books and movies. (And thank you for the props for LETTERS.)

I wish I could be there when Cari hears Nikki’s accent. πŸ™‚

  8. Being the completely asshat friend that I am, I’m FINALLY listening to this show.

You’ve made me want to use one of my Audible credits to get Fingersmith. I FREAKING love that book. And think the BBC did a wonderful job with the adaptation.

I’m just early in the listening – you’re just starting to talk about Oranges. I’ve not read nor seen it. I may now. Possibly.

Thank you for the 40’s voice.

  9. I enjoyed Maud’s part more, too, because she’s revealing so much and it changes what we thought we knew. That’s not giving too much away, is it?

  10. I just got Fingersmith from Audible. Guess A Feast For Crows is going on the back burner for 23 hours and 40 minutes of listening time.

  11. The only one of these I saw was Oranges and that was way back when it first came out. I know at the time I wasn’t all that impressed. But, since I have recently gotten netflix, I am adding all of these to my list so I can check them out. I am intrigued with Fingersmith and will be looking to see that first. How come the British do all these adaptions so much better then the US? I am failing to think of any really good ones done by the US. Well done show!

    • Correction: the Hours was a US adaption, and was done very well. My mistake! but I am still having problems thinking of other good adaptions from the US.

    • Thanks Marie! I have no clue why the US doesn’t do good adaptations like the bbc can. We should write a strongly worded letter and send it to…uh…someone!
