Flicks and Swizzle Sticks – Cult Classics

Join me, Nikki Smalls, for a raucous romp through a smattering of cult classics: Reefer Madness, Todd Browning’s Freaks, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the instant classic Sharknado! We didn’t have any giveaways from the last show, since I figured people that commented on a lesbian cinema show might not care to win a cult classic. So, comment away below to get entered to win a free movie from those we talked about on this podcast! Talk about your favorite Sharknado parts, or tell us a cult classic that we should talk about for a future show. Really, anything you wish to say will get you entered to win.

Also, Megan and I forgot to rank our favorites during the show (because, Sharknado is very distracting) so I’ll put mine below!

1-Freaks (because it really tugged my heart strings)
2-Sharknado (for pure entertainment and ridiculous enjoyment)
3-Rocky Horror Picture Show (because I’ve seen it SO much it’s hard to rank it that highly)
4-Reefer Madness (very enjoyable, but I’m thinking I’ll love the musical so much more)

So join Megan and I for a tasty Shocktop or Blue Moon and let your inner freak sing!

  1. I’m still listening but wanted to get a few comments in. First off, really loving the show!

I think we were stoned when we watched Reefer Madness and laughed loads.
I can also confirm that it’s impossible to drive more than 5 mph while stoned. Took me about 45 minutes to drive about a mile. Was ridiculous.

LOVE FREAKS! Haven’t seen it in years but it left an impression. Also, everyone should read the book Geek Love.

RHPS!! My father started taking me to midnight showings when I was about 7 years old. Yes, I think that does say a lot about my personality… Just for clarification, Janet = Slut, Brad = Asshole. Wasn’t Magenta the Bitch?

I lost count of how many times I’ve seen this movie but it has to be well over 100. I picked up a bootleg copy while stationed in Okinawa and watched it all the time. I think I still have it somewhere. It had Japanese subtitles. I, of course, picked up the 25th Anniversary Edition DVD right after it came out.

    Ok, going back to listening.

  2. It’s still played here at The Oriental theater at midnight once a month.

I have to say that watching it at home – no matter how large your TV – just can never capture the energy of the crowd. But I have to say, I don’t like it when the audience gets on stage. Keep it in the aisles!

  3. Great show, Nikki and Megan! Rocky Horror is my cult favorite. Sharknado = over the top ridiculous. Loved it! I like how they’d show flood waters in one scene and the next would just be light rain pattering on the ground.

Dark City is one of my favorite dystopian films. Jennifer Connelly is in it, which is a bonus. Love me some JC.

    Keep up the great work.

  4. I dressed up as Magenta and ‘did’ rocky horror over 100 times from the ages of 17-19. I produced and directed the stage play a couple of years ago and took my four year-old daughter to all the rehearsals. Now she knows all the words to every one of the songs. I am busy saving to pay for her therapy bills someday!

  5. Nikki!

Loved the show! RHPS is such a great film I watched it when I was younger and have not seen it in ages ๐Ÿ™‚ I need to see it again ASAP! And OMG sharknado sounds hilarious! I NEED to watch that,

The other films I’m not familiar with (probably because I’m 25 and British) ๐Ÿ˜‰ lol

And I wouldn’t know any good cult classics if they bit me in the Ass! ๐Ÿ˜€

Looking forward to the next show! ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. You should watch reefer madness the musical instead of the original. Adds extra hilarity!

Glad you enjoyed it and good luck in the drawing! And let me know when you finally watch Sharknado for sure

  7. I loved the show. I have only seen Rocky Horror, I loved that one, I am going to see about checking out and see if i can find the other ones you talked about. I have not seen Dark City, I want to see that too!! =D I loved hearing about your thoughts of the movies…you both made me want to watch them right away. I want to be in the drawing and I found that Sharknado is going to show up on DVD Sept. 9th! I think I may have to pick it up, everyone says how much fun it is!!

    Thanks for the fun!!
