Episode 57 – The Highwaywoman Show

There’s not much Andy and I love more than some highwaywoman/historical novels and we picked two books to feature for this episode: Mask of the Highwaywoman by Niamh Murphy and The Locket and the Flintlock by Rebecca S. Buck. We did enjoy one much more than the other but, who knows, you may disagree. Andy was boozeless but I had some golden ale in my Bountiful Teat tankard.

We’re doing our last Cocktail Hour swag give away for awhile since we’ll be with guest authors for the next few months, and then we like to give their stuff away instead. This time around, we’re giving away a key chain and a magnet. That’s right, two lucky winners! All you gotta do is answer one, or both if you like, of the following questions: what’s your favorite Cocktail Hour episode and why or what would you like to hear on a show with regard to either an author or a theme? That’s it. Just post a comment with your answer no later than midnight CST, January 25th to be entered to win. We’ll announce the chosen two on the next show. You know, the one with Georgia Beers. Woot!

We promised that we’d include a link to the interview that Cas did of us for the Xena & Ubers so here it is: http://xena-ubers.blogspot.com/. If you go and listen, please leave a comment and show Cas some love. It gets lonely out here in the blogosphere.

And here’s a special treat for our wonderful listeners!

  1. I enjoyed the show. I enjoyed the 2nd show with Ann McMan you all seemed so laid back. I went over and listened to your interview. Andy was really picked on for her drinking. Didn’t she spend most of her time before GCLS not drinking and working out.

    • Thanks Pat! And you’re right, Andy was the Queen of good eating and exercising. She took the teasing in stride and it sure made me laugh. And isn’t that what’s important?

  2. Sometimes, I prepare and read the book prior to listening to a podcast. That usually leaves me disappointed, since I feel that you did not talk enough about the book. Of course you don’t want to have a lot of spoilers in your shows, so you can’t talk about all the little details. So actually I rather listen unprepared to simply pick up suggestions for reading.
I like it when you have authors on the show (not just because of the giveaways), but my favorite type are the ones that have a specific theme. The Conqueror show is what got me started on those types of stories and is probably my favorite show for this reason.
I think you really need to do a theme show on bodyguards. I need to read more stories of that type. Just don’t do the Honor series and Sword of the Guardian. I already know those, I want new suggestions 🙂

  3. so was that a shout out or a call out? LOL as to suggestions for show topics, what about more fantasy/sci fi books/stories (especially ones that are available online for those of us who are always broke)? (Jane Fletcher’s Lorimal’s Chalice comes to mind as a favorite of mine in lesbian books, Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar books for mainstream stuff.)

i’m also a fan of mysteries – and i love reading/hearing about what processes writers go through. (use of beta readers, research, making it up, etc.)

  4. I’d love you to interview Liz Bradbury, because her 2 mysteries hit all my sweet spots.

Maybe do a fanfic show focused on a fandom besides XWP?

    How about bringing on snuffnyc?

  5. I would like to have a sci fi and a Voyager fanfic extravaganza!! Even doing a zombie, or end of the world, time travelling shows too would be awesome! or you could during Halloween do some monster type ones with battles of goblns and demons…

A few of my favorite shows were the movie ones, the holiday and the conqueror series shows. That is just to name a few.

  6. I also read both of these in the last week. Mask Of The HIghwaywoman was originally a short story online. I liked that version better. The instantaneous sex was my first BS moment and it just grew from there. Now, The second book, The Locket And The Flintlock, was a wonderful read. I had actually purchased it a few weeks ago and just never got to it. My “To Read” list is ridiculously long! Thank you for the show, I enjoy it, and share the link in my Facebook group. I would love any episodes that have western type stories, or anything that has women in uniform, like the Civil War or WWII. Thanks again for your time and effort!
